Lab-grown diamonds: HPHT and CVD

Lab-grown diamonds are grown in a laboratory; the crystal is carbon and is graded on the same 4C scale as natural diamond — carat, colour, clarity, cut. HPHT crystallises under extreme heat and pressure with a metal catalyst; CVD grows layer by layer inside a vacuum chamber from a carbon-rich gas. For larger center stones the two methods are quoted separately.

Moissanite

A silicon-carbide crystal with a higher refractive index and more fire than diamond, and a hardness of around 9.25 — it takes daily wear well and is one of our core materials.

High-carbon diamond

A high-carbon diamond simulant: close to diamond in look at a lower cost, which makes it practical for design development and volume pieces.

Metals: S925 silver and 10K / 14K / 18K gold

S925 is sterling silver, 92.5% silver, usually rhodium- or gold-plated. The karat states the gold content: 10K about 41.7%, 14K about 58.5%, 18K about 75%. The higher the gold content, the warmer the colour and the softer the metal, so halo and pavé settings put more demand on the setter.

Telling them apart

Moissanite and diamond separate with a thermal conductivity tester. If you want a report, note it in your order; availability and cost are confirmed by email.

What the Gulf market picks

Different markets make different trade-offs from the same grade sheet: Gulf orders weight the size of the center stone and how visible the gold is, which is why 18K with a halo is the common pairing — warm metal holding a larger stone shape — while bezel and claw suit long daily wear. Moissanite's higher dispersion reads loudly under gathering and event lighting, and high-carbon diamond is practical for testing a design first. None of this changes what the materials are; it changes which piece they belong in.
