Why loose stones stand on their own

A made-to-order piece normally starts with the stone, because the center stone fixes the carat, the proportion and where the budget lands. Loose stones for wholesale sit in the same branch of the catalogue as the working tools a store or a bench keeps, testers among them.

Grading on the 4C scale

A lab-grown diamond is carbon and is graded on the same scale as a natural stone: carat, colour, clarity, cut. The shape — round, princess, oval, emerald, pear — changes the proportion and the setting it needs, and one grade can read differently under another cut, which is why cut keeps its own line.

Telling the three materials apart

Lab-grown diamond (HPHT or CVD), moissanite and high-carbon diamond look close to one another and are different materials. Moissanite is a silicon-carbide crystal with a higher refractive index and more fire, hardness around 9.25, and it takes daily wear well. High-carbon diamond is a simulant whose cost suits design development and volume pieces. A thermal conductivity tester separates moissanite from diamond, and the order line states the material and specification a piece was made against.

Reports and testing

If a larger center stone or a loose stone should carry an appraisal or a laboratory report, note it on the order and we commission it. Availability and cost are confirmed by email rather than published as a flat figure.

Pairing stone and setting

Claws let light into the crown and give the most fire; a bezel protects the girdle and keeps a clean silhouette for everyday wear; a halo reads the center stone a size larger; pavé turns the metal into a continuous light and carries the highest labour. Each is one line on the quotation, so each can be taken or left.
